Portfolio

Site: COASTER-net.com
Work: I have worked on the website since August 2000 and have since that time redesigned the whole website multiple times including transforming the updating from manual html editing to fully automated web updates. I have also been a vital aspect in daily running of the website. The site is php and mysql driven and fully customized to fit our needs. The website is updated through a staff area which administrators can allow certain users to update only the sections of the site they are assigned to. The site currently receives over 50,000 unique visitors a month.
Site: Coaster Crew
Work: A client contacted me in early 2007 looking into transferring their website from another host. They needed the site up in under a week and this was accomplished. The site allows for the staff on the forum to upload podcasts through an administrative page. The upload form has a progress bar and can handle files in excess of 100mb without a problem. The website is almost fully automated in terms that the client is able to update most aspects of the website without any web knowledge. The site also required a member database to be created which was fully customized to fit their needs. The site also features a fully integrated photo gallery where members of the forums could upload their images to administrator defined categories. There is also an rss feed for the podcasts along with a flash mp3 player.
Site: Two Guys Productions
Work: My first official client needed a website for their production company based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The website needed to have a photo gallery where the company could add photos from their events with ease. The site also features an email newsletter where members could add their email to the distribution list and then the administrators of the site could easily email everyone on the distribution list. Also included on the site is a list of their upcoming events which is added through the admin area. Events automatically disappear after the event has passed. The site also has three other branch sites which where created to fit special events the company was participating in; these websites required quick updates.
Site: Campus Weather Service
Work: As a member of the Penn State Campus Weather service I became active in the web committee where one other student and I worked on the website. We released a new layout this year which was a great improvement over the previous design. In debuting the new design we worked to streamline php code and to improve functionality of the website. One of my pet projects was the coding of a forecast verification system. This system needed to interact with the way the forecasts where stored in the database and with real world weather data. The script requires checking the National Weather Service page every 10 minutes to build a database of the weather at different forecast points. This data is then compared to the forecasted values to determine how accurate the forecast was. This data is then displayed in a textual and graphical manner for all forecasts to see.
Site: Earth and Mineral Science Student Council
Work: I became webmaster of the Earth and Mineral Science Student Council half-way through my freshman year. This website is used to get the word out about the council and its events. The website features a photo gallery which uses JavaScript pop-ups of the image. This creates a professional looking display of the images. The constitution of the council is displayed using AJAX which allows for refreshing of certain aspects of the page without refreshing the whole page. This saves bandwidth and decreases loading time.
Site: Snowing in Endwell
Work: I am the creator of Snowing in Endwell which is a competition for my local high school. The website allows users to enter a storm total snowfall forecast and the status of school for the day of the event. The website then automatically closes the event as the administrator defined time. Once the event is over the administrator, through the admin area of the website, can enter the final snow total. Once the final snow total is entered the website automatically adds the points to the users.
